Auditions

Everyone is welcome to sing with us. But, in order to assess which section you’ll sing with, a brief audition is necessary. Auditions are very casual and one-on-one with our director. You may prepare a song to sing, but that isn’t necessary. Mostly, you’ll sing some scales so the Director can place you appropriately, and we can’t take rehearsal time up for these placements. Auditions are usually held in August and in January, but if you are joining mid-season or you can’t make the main audition date work, our Director can arrange another time (usually before a rehearsal, but sometimes she can fit you into her voice lesson schedule).

Rehearsals

We rehearse on Thursday evenings from 6:30-8:30pm, September through late May, early June. If you are interested in joining us, you are welcome to come sit in on a rehearsal. Some of our members carpool, so if you don’t like to drive after dark, you’re sure to be able to catch a ride with another member.

Rehearsals are held at First Christian Church, 1625 N Broadway in Shawnee (use the rear/East entrance).

Rehearsals are a blend of work and fun. Our CHOREOGRAPHER leads us in some informal dance moves to get us physically warmed up and energized (and to throw off the stress of the day), then Dr. Hunter works with us on warm-ups and technique-building, and then we get to the music. And, of course, we end with a prayerful sendoff.

Nearing one of our main performances, there are usually an extra rehearsal or two.

Members are required to make a certain percentage of rehearsals (averaging 3 out of 4 a month), and when we’re getting close to a performance, the whole choir counts on one another to show up for rehearsals, especially the dress rehearsals.

Performances

Our calendar is set for four main performances per year—one in the Fall, one at Christmastime, and two in the Spring. We also plan casual performances—with the entire choir or just an ensemble—when opportunities present themselves, depending on interest. We hope to attend some competitions in the future.

Main performances are required for all members (baring unforeseen circumstances, etc.).

Concert wardrobe is, in most cases, black slacks and a white blouse/dress shirt—something that is in a lot of people’s closets already. Men are asked to wear a tie. Black Dress shoes (no high heels). MOre details can be found in the choir member handbook once you join.
